Description
The Saint Max Net, dedicated to the life and martyrdom of St. Maximilian Kolbe. The net has met continuously since 1998. St. Max is the only known person to have held an amateur radio license (SP3RN) and be a canonized saint. He is regarded as the patron saint of amateur radio.
A member of the Franciscan order, Fr. Maximilian Kolbe was a Catholic priest from Poland who founded the monastery of Niepokalanów near Warsaw and operated amateur radio station SP3RN. Fr. Kolbe was imprisoned by the Nazis at the notorious Auschwitz concentration camp (prisoner # 16670) where he volunteered to take the place of one of ten men condemned to die after a prison escape attempt. He was martyred by the Nazis on August 14, 1941 with forced starvation for several weeks followed by an injection of carbolic acid. He was canonized by Saint John Paul II on October 10, 1982. A fellow St. Max Net member, Bill La May, K3RMW, has written an excellent biography of St. Max: The Life of St. Maximilian Kolbe - Apostle of Mass Communications.
The St. Max Net meets on Sunday nights on 7.241 MHz at 2400Z (7 PM EST / 8 PM EDST) and on 14.341 MHz at 2200Z (5 PM EST / 6 PM EDST).
